Successful Grants

Listed below are grants that NetWaste & its member councils have recently been successful in applying for through the EPA Waste Less Recycle More (WLRM) grants program. Full details available Here

The group is currently working to deliver the activities under these grants, with some great outcomes expected for the region.

In total, over $7 million in grant funds has been secured for the NetWaste region to improve overall waste management outcomes.

Combating Illegal Dumping

The Clean-up and Prevention Program grants support local councils and other public land managers to identify local illegal dumping sites and implement prevention and clean-up action. Total of $2 million; individual grants of up to $150,000.

Successful NetWaste Councils:

• Blue Mountains City Council – Project to remove waste from identified hotspots & install needed infrastructure ie signs, barriers & gates. The project will also involve an educational component.
• Funding for illegal dumping cleanups in Bourke, Lachlan, Walgett, Cabonne, Central Darling, Narromine and Brewarrina Councils.
• Set up of surveillance cameras and drone filming to identify illegal dumping

Community Recycling Centres (CRC)

The four-year, $44.3 million Community Recycling Centre Fund provides funding to establish community recycling centres or similar mobile services for household problem waste.

Litter Grant

Litter grants funded by Waste Less, Recycle More support local councils to deliver litter prevention projects that answer their community needs.  These projects play an important role in achieving long term goals for litter reduction in NSW. Total of $2.4 million; individual grants: $25,000 to $125,000.

Successful NetWaste Councils:

• Bathurst Regional Council – ‘Hey Tosser’. Council, working in conjunction with CSU to address litter hotspots around the CBD & university.
• Brewarrina Shire Council – Brewarrina Town anti-litter educational & enforcement program project tacking litter in the retail district. Also using ‘Hey Tosser’ signage & advertising.
• Dubbo City Council – Dubbo CBD, ‘Bin Your Butts & Bat for the Macquarie River’ project, focusing on reducing cigarette butt litter in the area.
• Lithgow City Council – Lithgow Litter Prevention Program, targeting cigarette butt litter & general litter at roadside stops.
• NetWaste – Roadside litter, ‘Cover Your Load’, aiming to reduce litter from uncovered loads.

Local Government Organics Collections System’s

In conjunction with other NetWaste Councils, the following successful Councils have now implemented a new organics waste management system. This current contract has a ten year term and has already seen extensive diversion of food and yard waste from landfill. New mobile garbage bins and kitchen caddies are provided to all included households and council provide instruction and education on their correct use.

Love Food Hate Waste

The grants support behaviour change projects, especially for the target groups that tend to waste the most food: young people aged 18–24, people earning more than $100,000 a year, families with young children and small-to-medium enterprises in the hospitality and food retail sectors. Total of $1.4 million; individual grants: $5000 to $70,000.

Organics Infrastructure (Large and Small) Program

The Waste Less, Recycle More Organics Infrastructure (Large and Small) Program provides $41.67 million over four years to fund infrastructure and equipment to reduce food and garden organics waste going to landfill. The program is divided into four streams, targeting funding to four project types; Stream 1: Food and Garden Organics Processing, Stream 2: Business Organics Recycling, Stream 3: Food Donation & Stream 4: Home Composting.

Successful NetWaste Councils:

• Broken Hill City Council (stream 1) – Council diverts approximately 2,000 tonnes of organics from landfill. The project involves community education as well as a new equipment to screen raw and processed organics.
• Dubbo City Council (stream 1) – Council has build an enclosed tunnel composting facility at Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre to compost organic waste sourced primarily from its proposed new kerbside organics collection service.

Landfill Consolidation and Environmental Improvements Program

The program is designed to support regional councils address potential liabilities posed by landfill activities, reduce environmental risks, and contribute to the long-term protection of the environment. It aims to address problems that arise when regional and remote landfills are poorly managed, and to support rural councils’ move towards improved, benchmark techniques for managing landfills.
