Existing Regional Contracts
Through NetWaste, a number of regional contracts have been established with member Councils, which allows remote areas of the NetWaste region to access services previously not offered due to economic or geographic constraints. These contracts typically provide significant financial benefit to participating Councils.
The following regional contracts are currently in place:
Processing of Garden Organics and Wood and Timber Contract
Seventeen (17) member NetWaste Councils participate in this regional contract which serves to chip garden organic material and produce a mulch product for Councils. The mulch product can then be reused by Councils whether through simple mulching practices or composting operations. We are currently in a two year contract with Ausshredding Pty Ltd. It is a 2 year initial contract with possible extension options available.
Since 2006, 667,825 cubic meters of garden organic and wood timber material has been chipped and diverted from landfill. That’s 222,608 tonnes!
Central Regional Domestic Waste and Recycling Contract
This contract involves Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Parkes, Forbes and Orange and Lachlan Councils and is serviced by JR Richards and Sons. Significant financial and environmental benefits have been realised for the member Councils, with a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) constructed at the Orange Resource Recovery Centre to process the recyclables collected in each of these Council areas. Bathurst Regional Council commenced delivery of their recyclables to the MRF in 2008.
Under this contract 98,678 tonnes of recyclables have been collected and processed.
Dubbo – Narromine Joint Recycling Contract
Dubbo City and Narromine Shire Councils commenced a joint recycling contract with JR Richards and Sons in 2010 for a 10 year term. Narromine previously had an arrangement for kerbside recycling, however this contract meant the introduction of a new service for Dubbo residents.
The product is collected and delivered to a large Transfer Station in Dubbo. From there, it is placed in larger walking floor trailers and transported to Sydney facility for sorting and recycling.
Since the contract commenced, 17,905 tonnes of material has been recycled.
Collection of Scrap Metal
Scrap metal is a prominent waste type received by Councils to their landfills and waste transfer stations, which has significant reuse and recycling opportunities. Twenty one of the NetWaste Councils are part of a regional contract which sees a regular collection service for this material while receiving a price for the commodity. This contract in particular has been effective and beneficial for the more isolated Councils who can be negatively impacted by their geographic locations and also provides an extra opportunity for Councils to direct funds back to their smaller communities by allocating the collected rebate for small community grant opportunities.
This was the first regional contract established by the group back in 2004. Since its commencement 127,659.284 tonnes of scrap metal has been collected.
Collection of Used Motor Oil
Following the installation of used oil collection units at a number of landfills and waste facilities across the region, NetWaste worked to establish a regional contract for the collection and recycling of this material. The current service contract is held by Cleanaway Pty Ltd and again has provided many benefits to the twenty four participating Councils.
Since 2009 when the first contract was established, 1,181,761 litres has been collected and recycled. View here for further details on how to dispose of used motor oil
Regional Environmental Monitoring of Licensed Landfills
This contract involves 8 of the NetWaste Councils and is an existing service arrangement that has been pursued for a Contractor to undertake the environmental monitoring in accordance with the Environment Protection Licenses for their landfills. Premise Pty Ltd was awarded this contract, which is a two year arrangement with two possible extensions that commenced on 30th June 2018, the contract is now set to expire in June 2021.
The financial savings for the participating Councils has been significant, with a number of other NetWaste members interested in participating in the new contract establishment process in the future.
